Article from the Visalia Times Delta: By Calley Cederlof

In 2017, 128 police officers died in the line of duty, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

With more mass shootings taking place nationwide, the urgency to protect law enforcement officers is growing.

A local organization is raising money to do just that.

Visalia Police Officers Foundation, created in July 2017, has developed a program that outfits Valley law enforcement agencies with trauma kits, designed to be used by officers on themselves or others when immediate medical attention isn’t available.

“We feel that the need to educate officers and provide them with kits to help save their lives is extremely important because of these stats and because of the things that are happening,” said Thomas Higgins, Visalia Police Officers Foundation executive director. “It will be the difference between life and death.”

While kits are available for purchase online, they are more expensive and include unnecessary items, Higgins said. The kits created by the foundation cost $100 each.

“We don’t provide extra fluff; there’s no Band-Aids and extra stuff that goes into it because this is not a first aid kit,” Higgins said. “This is a trauma kit that’s designed specifically for officers to use in the field on themselves or another officer when they’re injured and a paramedic can’t get to them.”

The main scenarios that require the use of a kit include active shooter, remote area searches, violent assaults and ambush scenarios. Officers receive training on how to use the items at no cost.

The kit includes:

  • Combat application tourniquet
  • Quick-clot combat gauze
  • SWAT-T tourniquet
  • Emergency trauma dressings
  • Two chest seals
  • EMS Shears
  • One carrying bag
